The Disaster Research Center (KFS) at Freie Universität Berlin is a primarily social science and humanities interdisciplinary institution. The research areas include the social, political, and economic construction, development, progression, and management of crises and disasters. It conducts basic research as well as application-oriented research and consulting. In the transdisciplinary BMBF-Forschungsprojekt RESIK – Resilienz und Evakuierungsplanung für sozioökonomische Infrastrukturen im medico-sozialen Kontext, which KFS coordinates, the KFS subproject “Resilienz und Evakuierung von Einrichtungen mit besonderen Bedarfen (RESCUE)” pursues the overarching goal of identifying potentials for strengthening the resilience of critical infrastructures (CRITIS) using hospitals as an example and reducing their vulnerability to disruptions in regular operations in order to avert or minimize harm to life and limb.

Scope of Responsibilities:
Tasks to be performed include:
-conceptual and theoretical analysis of (disaster) sociological approaches to critical infrastructure, disaster process models, and volunteer engagement.
-Preparation, implementation and analysis of qualitative interviews and participatory workshops.
-Continuing lecture and publication activities
-Support in the acquisition of external funding.

Hiring Requirements:
Completed academic university studies in sociology, Master’s or Magister/Diplom preferred.

Desirable:
– Experience in sociological research, especially crisis and disaster research.
– strong organizational and communication skills
– independent, structured and reliable working style
– great interest in social science disaster research
– knowledge of the German civil protection system
– good knowledge of qualitative social research
– publication and presentation experience
– willingness to travel
– experience in project management and acquisition of third-party funding is an advantage
– willingness to work in a team
