The Vienna Doctoral School of Social Sciences promotes innovative, excellent, problem-oriented research that aspires to contribute to societal debates and address key global challenges. University Assistant (prae doc) at the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology under the supervision of Tatjana Thelen (State, Care, Kinship, Property)

Social and cultural anthropology adopts a comparative perspective to focus on the variety of forms that human coexistence takes in various places and at various times. Nowadays, the focus of research is frequently on processes related to colonialism, globalisation and the worldwide flows of migration seen in the present day, for example the redefinition of identities and cultural distinctions. Job description:

• Contribution to scientific publications and research projects
• Participation in organisation of conferences, meetings, symposiums
• Contribution to project application and (external) fundraising
• Teaching assignments according to the extent regulated by the collective agreement
• Examination activities
• Support of students
• Participation in evaluation activities and in quality assurance
• Participation in administration of the department

Profile:

• MA in Social and Cultural Anthropology
• We expect the successful candidate to sign a doctoral thesis agreement within 12–18 months
• Thematic fields of interest: State, Care, Kinship, Property (see: cast.univie.ac.at)
• Experience with ethnographic research
• Excellent English skills
• Ability to work independently
• Additional assets would be: Experience in scientific management, experience in acquisition of thirdparty fundings, knowledge of universitary structures and processes, as well as experience in publishing
scientific publications
• Desirable qualifications are: Teaching experience / experience of working with e-learning

Duration of employment: 4 years
Extent of Employment: 30 hours/week
Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 Grundstufe (praedoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade. The candidate who is selected for this position joins the ViDSS as student member.
